Systemically they are not used in children because of their dental side effects (tooth discoloration), or in pregnancy. Tetracyclines will also predispose the patient to sunburn. They are largely reserved for clamydial infections and acne therapy.
The protein synthesis inhibitor drugs are all broad spectrum and are affective against the most common Gram positive and Gram negative organisms, providing resistance has not developed.
