Chloramphenicol

Comments:-

An excellent broad spectrum antibiotic that is still used for eye and ear infections. It is generally not used widely sytemically (specially in children) due to substantial risks for bone marrow degeneration leading to aplastic anaemia or bone marrow hypoplasia. Some physicians and institutions have a policy of not using it.
extended use over 40 years has indicated that an extremely small number of individuals have developed aplastic anaemia following extended (and largely unsupervised) use of chloramphenicol eye products.
Protein synthesis inhibitor drugs are all broad spectrum and providing resistance has not developed, they are affective against the most common Gram positive and Gram negative organisms. Chloramphenicol is not effective against pseudomonas aeriginosa and serratia marcescens.

Chloramphenicol should be stored between 2°C and 8°C.
