Set in a quiet corner of rural France, this is an affecting human drama of love, loss and resilience unfolding against a backdrop of WW1. The women take over the running of the farm when the men go off to war, and struggle to re-adjust when they come home. It is like a Hardy novel, with seasonal rhythms and slow unfolding rural life. It has been described as 'a richly compassionate, fiercely acted, and beautifully shot depiction of the second conflict, ie the battle of wills on the home front as the characters struggle to maintain the farm during and after the war'.
